National Tap Dance Day

Today is National Tap Dance Day. It is to celebrate the birthday of the great tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who at the height of his fame coined the phrase, "Everything's Copasetic." This resulted in the formation of the Copasetics Club, a tap dancers forum, in 1949. Tap dancing is an American art form evolved from clog dancing and Irish jigging combined with many different types of music including African music. Tap is always changing with many modern tap dancers like Gregory Hines, Brenda Bufalino, Dianne Walker, Jason Samuels Smith, Chloe Arnold, Sammy Davis Jnr and others adding other modern steps to it. National Tap Dance Day was the brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen. After lobbying Representative John Conyers of Michigan and then-Senator Al D'Amato of New York won congressional passage of Resolution 131 in 1988, declaring May 25 National Tap Dance Day. Tap dance day is celebrated all over the world and includes events which may be organized by a studio or tap dance interest groups as well as individuals.
